Our sustainable goal: 30% less emissions by 2030, climate neutral by 2050
Sustainability for many years is one of our main topics for thyssenkrupp. We based our climate strategy directly on the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, a landmark agreement signed by 175 countries. Three times in a row, the non-governmental agency CDP awarded us the highest rating for our climate protection. Therefore, we have set ourselves a particularly ambitious target for the future: be climate-neutral from 2050 onwards.
Innovative technologies make steel production more sustainable
For steel production thyssenkrupp already pursues two innovative approaches that significantly reduce CO2 emissions. The first is the Carbon2Chem® project, for which we expect large-scale industrial use before 2030. The other one is the so-called hydrogen route, which is to become fully effective by 2050.
CO2 into base chemicals
for steel manufacturers
Carbon2Chem allows to convert steel mill gases – including the CO2 they contain – into base chemicals. The steel mill gases will be made into starting materials for the manufacture of fertilizers and fuels. The greenhouse gas would then no longer be discharged into the atmosphere. And the energy needed for the conversion process will also come from renewable sources.
The hydrogen route is based on the use of "green" hydrogen, which is to augment and later replace coal as a reducing agent, so that in the long term no CO2 will be produced during steel production.
EnviNOx® - converting greenhouse gas
N2O, also known as laughing gas or nitrous oxide, laughing gas is much more harmful to the environment than CO2. It is produced among other things in the manufacture of nitric acid. The EnviNOx® process almost completely removes N2O removed from nitric acid production. It also converts the nitrogen oxides contained in the waste gas into water and nitrogen.
There is no direct contact between the process equipment of the EnviNOx® unit, the intermediate products and the final product (nitric acid), therefore there is no risk of contamination or loss of performance.

Around the world roughly 30 EnviNOx systems are now in operation, reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides by around 20,000 tons and laughing gas by around 56,000 tons.
With proper preparation, a range of carbon materials can be easily gasified to syngas, from which chemicals, liquid fuels, electricity or gas for direct reduction of iron (DRI) are then obtained. Gasification is an extremely clean and efficient technology.

The cement industry produces approximately 7% of carbon dioxide emissions. To reduce this figure, thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions has developed a so-called grey2green strategy that includes four key solutions:
- Capturing, storing and using plants’ CO2 emissions thanks to Oxyfuel и Carbon2Chem® processes
- Reducing NOx emissions, protecting the environment from hyperacidity with CemCat SCR
- Replacing fossil fuels with biomass and waste
- Using activated clay instead of clinker
